On your way down to the beach, Southwood Farm, with its magnificent range of Victorian buildings, stands proudly in the landscape above Newgale. Set on the coast it is open to winds from the Atlantic. Newgale is popular with surfers, and anglers, as well as beach-goers. The pebble bank was formed by rising sea levels at the end of the Ice Age and the preserved stumps of a drowned forest can sometimes be seen off the northern end of the beach at low tide. Many times I’ve gone down to have a walk on the beach and seen the sunset, and the 2 mile beach is often completely submerged.
