Newport is a town, parish, community, electoral ward and ancient port of Parrog, on the Pembrokeshire coast in West Wales at the mouth of the River Nevern in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The Village is not far from the beautiful Preseli hills and overlooks the river Nevern, is popular for the water sports and walks in the Preseli Hills. The ancient landscape of the Carn Ingli hill overlooks the village with its Iron Age hillfort with Bronze Age hut circles, and within the town Carreg Coetan Arthur burial chamber is built.
This small chambered tomb from the New Stone Age is one of the best-preserved of a number of burial sites clustered within the Nevern Valley. A large wedge-shaped capstone balances on two of its four original stone uprights. Excavations of the site have uncovered artefacts including Neolithic pottery, stone tools and cremated human bones.
The ‘coetan’ part of its name is a reference to the game of quoits, often associated with monument of this type. According to legend, King Arthur himself played the game with the stone of this tomb
The old port area contains much of historic interest, including some of the old quay walls, two former lime kilns and the fisherman’s huts nettled together next to the stone face slipways. The sea walls made from local stone have protected these coastal houses for many years from the crashing waves of the winter high tides. Linking both sides of the river is an old crossing point known as 'The Chain', still exists for anyone wishing to wade across the estuary to Traeth Mawr “Big Beach” at low tide. However this can only be done by wading across at knee level.
Parrog also plays host to some of the most spectacular sunsets. At different times of the year the sun can set behind Dinas Island making for some dramatic silhouettes of the headland. During the summer the sun sets in to the Irish Sea - be warned, once you experience a Parrog sunset you'll be hooked for life!
