The Wild Atlantic Way is an extraordinary journey, revealing landscapes and coastlines of a beauty that many of us only ever see in magazines or dream of visiting. It is a truly inspiring and memorable experience, with each county offering its own distinct character and charm.
Throughout the trip, we travelled past ancient stone walls, winding narrow lanes, expansive peat bogs, isolated cottages, grazing sheep and, of course, the dramatic cliff faces that define much of Ireland’s western coastline. The journey proved invaluable for my sketching practice, encouraging me to slow down, observe more carefully and see familiar subjects in new ways. Completing more than one hundred sketches in just fifteen days was a considerable challenge, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed. My hope is to eventually develop these sketches further and perhaps create a book documenting the journey.
The Narrow Lane was inspired by a scene we discovered while finding our way back to the main route. It was one of those unexpected moments that often become the most memorable. I was drawn to the way the lane gently twists through the landscape, bordered by huge boulders that form a natural hedge line. Beyond them, a farmhouse peeks over the horizon, quietly anchoring the scene. The image captures the character of rural Ireland, simple, timeless and full of charm, and serves as a reminder that some of the most rewarding discoveries are found when taking the road less travelled.
