Criccieth

I painted Criccieth many years ago as we stopped off from a holiday on the Llyn Peninsular. A planned stop as I had seen a bakery in the main street and thought I must not miss the opportunity to have a cake or two, but my thinking was also to run down the beach and capture this image. It is truly a castle to capture the imagination, overlooking the town like a Crown set on its own rocky headland and two beaches with views over the Cardigan Bay.
No wonder Turner felt moved to paint it. By then it was a picturesque ruin – destroyed by one of Wales’s most powerful medieval princes, Owain Glyndŵr.
