Saint-Rémy-de-Provence was painted following our trip to the south of France, our trip was inspired by the old Impressionist masters and Vincent van Gogh. This particular spot was first sketched during our walk tracing Vincent’s steps around the town. It was so peaceful and striking that we had to stop and take in the atmosphere.
The building stood brilliantly in the midday sunlight, its brightness softened by a garden filled with orange roses. It was truly inspiring one of those places where you immediately understand why an artist would feel compelled to create.
It’s easy to see how Vincent spent such a transformative and highly productive year (May 1889–May 1890) at Saint-Paul de Mausole following his mental health crisis. During his time there, he produced around 150 works, including The Starry Night and Irises, drawing inspiration from the asylum’s gardens, olive groves, and the surrounding Alpilles mountains.
Standing there myself, I felt a small connection to that same creative pull. I had to paint this scene for myself and I know I’ll be returning again.
