The Wild Atlantic Way had long been on my camper van bucket list, and fortunately our 15-day journey from Kinsale to the Giant's Causeway treated us to every kind of weather imaginable. Following the coastline for the entire route, we experienced the ever-changing character of Ireland's rugged western shores.
Keem Beach, often referred to as Keem Bay, is a spectacular beach located on Achill Island in County Mayo. The drive to reach it is an experience in itself, winding along the dramatic cliffs of Achill Head with breath taking views around every bend. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, golden sands and towering cliffs, the bay also gained international recognition as a filming location for The Banshees of Inisherin.
On arrival, we were greeted by a flock of sheep that seemed to watch our every move as we followed the path down towards the beach. Beneath a brilliant blue sky, the bay looked almost unreal. However, true to the nature of the Wild Atlantic Way, the weather soon changed and we found ourselves taking shelter beside a chip van in the car park. It turned out to be the perfect vantage point to watch dark clouds sweep across the landscape, transforming the bay from a welcoming paradise into something far more dramatic and mysterious. In those moments, it was easy to appreciate both the beauty and the harshness of life shaped by this coastline.
Keem Beach truly feels like a film set. I’m grateful I had the time to pause, absorb the atmosphere and witness this remarkable place at its very best.
